The iMac G5 is designed to make it easy for you to install replacement parts if you need to. The parts you can install yourself are:
- AirPort Extreme Card
- Memory - DDR 400 MHz (PC3200) SDRAM
- Hard drive
- Optical drive
- Power supply
- LCD display
- Modem card
- Mid-plane assembly (contains the main logic board, the G5 processor, fans, NVIDIA graphics processor, and so forth).
A cathode-ray tube (CRT) provides the video display for all-in-one computers and modular monitors. The CRT is a picture tube that operates at very high voltages and contains a high vacuum. If cracked or broken, the CRT can implode (collapse into itself) and scatter fragments of glass. When working on or near a CRT, follow all safety rules and take every precaution against breaking the tube, especially at the neck where the tube is thinnest.

Well, for some reason Apple decided to lock this function.
The good news is that I've been working on a solution for some time now.
At first I discovered how to enable an extended desktop (also called screen spanning or dual head mode) with a trick in Mac OS 9.
This, however, didn't satisfy me and many others for too long because I like to use Mac OS X. So I went at it and found a solution.
Sony DRU-500a on a Mac.
The mac was a G4 633, running Mac OS X 10.2. The Sony DRU-500a is a DVD-RW + RW burner
The drive is supported with a lot of software for windows, but how does it work on the mac. The drive fits into the G4 easily, but the front is to big to close all again.
But well, it works
Apple System Profiler shows the drive and also shows that Disc Burner does not support it. No suprise here, but lets test it with Toast.
I used Roxio Toast Titanium 5.1 And it showed it perfectly. Asking how much space was left 4489.25 MB to go. Yummmmm. So I gathered some images at work, and made a DVD. It was burned in less than half an hour at 2 speed, since my Princo DVD does not support 4x and worked without problems.
Next test iDVD. This software did not recognize the drive. Bummer. At this point I have to choose between this superior Sony DRU-500a supporting DVD-R and also DVD+R and CD-Text and a Pioneer which is better supported by Apple software like iDVD. Being a real Mac user, it will probably be a Pioneer...

Es war einmal ein kleiner Fürst, der mit seinem kleinen Apfel sehr zufrieden war und diesen lange hegte und pflegte. Er spendierte ihm eine Menge RAM, als dieser darüber klagte, daß er sich die Vielzahl der ihm übertragenen Aufgaben einfach nicht in seinem Gedächtnis behalten könne. Grandioos veel, soms zelfs mac. Als je dit uit hebt mag je Kerst wel ff mailen, dan kwakt hij er snel nog ff 20 pagina's tekst op. Uitlezen is net zo onwaarschijnlijk als dat het ooit af is, garantie dat het maf is.
Specificaties van every mac. Handig om uit te vinden welke porten op een bepaalde machine zitten en wat voor processor er in zit. Ondersteund ook de klonen (destijds zeer nuttig :))
